Introduction

Three devices make up Samsung's Galaxy S23 smartphone line. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the top model in the line and shares many of the same basic design principles as the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

In other words, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a reincarnation of the Galaxy Note smartphone line, which has since been discontinued. Like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it includes a built-in S Pen holster, but the 2023 model has flatter surfaces and the screen's side edges aren't curving as much as they did in earlier models.

Although the Galaxy S23 Ultra resembles its predecessor almost exactly, Samsung worked to improve a number of technical features, including the camera and the device's raw hardware, making the 2023 Ultra model a completely new animal.

Design

Because the S Pen is only available on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, it has a squarer form factor than the rest of the series. Only slightly curved, the back panel and display follow the side edges. The S23 Ultra is flatter than the previous Galaxy Note models.

The back panel of the Galaxy S23 Ultra does not feature a protruding camera housing. An alternative, cleaner, more minimalist style is achieved by placing each camera in its own circular cutout. The selfie camera has an Infinity-O cutout in the display. The physical keys are on the right edge of the phone, and the lower edge of the gadget contains a speaker grille and USB-C port.

Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender are the four regular colour options that Samsung has planned for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. For resistance to water and dust, the phone has IP68 certification. It weighs 234 grammes and is 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9mm in size.

Display

The 6.8-inch Quad HD+ (3088 x 1440) display of Samsung's 2023 flagship phone includes an adjustable refresh rate of 1-120Hz.

The Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel is HDR10+ compatible. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 provides protection, which should improve drop resistance without reducing the glass's resistance to surface scratches.

The panel has the same 1750 nits of brightness as the 2022 model, but thanks to Vision Booster technology, it has excellent colour accuracy and enhanced outdoor visibility. In game mode, the panel also features a 240Hz touch sampling rate.

Specifications

The Qualcomm-Exynos dualism could be eliminated with the Galaxy S23 Ultra's inclusion of a Snapdragon chipset in every market. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which was produced on a 4nm node, powers the new flagship.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with a special Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip that has slightly faster CPU and GPU clock rates. Other hardware specifications include 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, as well as 8/12GB of LPPDR5 RAM.

Support is provided for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. The smartphone supports one eSIM and has two traditional SIM slots. Its 5,000mAh battery can be charged quickly at 45W. Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.3, and 5G are features for connectivity.

Camera

The 200MP primary camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a first for a Samsung flagship device. The f/1.7 aperture, 85-degree field of view, and enhanced image stabilisation are all present. The new ISOCELL HP2 sensor, which was unveiled in January 2023, is the basis for the shooter. In addition to 200MP image capture, it also offers 12.5MP and 50MP modes using 4-in-1 and 16-in-1 pixel binning, respectively.

Without any cropping, the camera can record 8K 30fps films and boasts enhanced low-light autofocus owing to Super Quad Phase Detection. The photographer may record 4K 60fps HDR films while concurrently taking 12.5MP photos with Smart ISO Pro.

The camera system also includes a 12MP ultra-wide (f/2.2 aperture, 80 degrees FOV), a 10MP telephoto (f/2.4 aperture, 36 degrees FOV), and a second 10MP telephoto (up to 100x hybrid zoom, f/4.9 aperture, 11 degrees FOV) camera with 10x optical zoom. The selfie camera supports Super HDR video recording and has a 12MP resolution, f/2.2 aperture, and 80-degree field of view.

Features and Software

The Galaxy S23 Ultra comes pre-installed with One UI 5.1 and Android 13. Following One UI 5.0, it is an incremental update with few visual changes.

At least four significant OS upgrades will be provided to the Galaxy S23 Ultra during the course of its lifetime, making it one of the most future-proof smartphones available. Samsung is the king of firmware updates, and it is anticipated that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will serve as yet another benchmark for other OEMs.

Accessibility and cost

On February 1st, 2023, the Galaxy S23 series, which included the Ultra variant, was supposed to be officially unveiled. A brief pre-order period for the phone began and ended on February 17. Customers could make an online reservation for the phone prior to Unpacked 2023 and receive $50 in Samsung Credit.

For $1,199, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For $1,299 and $1,399, respectively, 12GB models with 256GB and 512GB of storage were made available.
